Intro: call transfer on a Snom desk phone

On Snom desk phones, it's possible to use both blind or attended transfer, and to transfer a call both dialling the number manually or using a BLF key (if configured)

This works in a slightly different way on the D1xx/D3xx/D7xx series and on the D86x series, as described in each section below

Transfer parameters

There are more than these three parameters, but these are the main ones to control what happens on the phone when trying to transfer a call

transfer_on_hangup: this is disabled by default, if enabled it allows the phone to transfer the call by placing the handset on hook

disable_blind_transfer: this is disabled by default, if enabled it allows to use attended transfer

quick_transfer: this controls the action when you press a BLF key, by default is set to "new_call" but you can choose to use the BLF to transfer a call by setting it to "blind" or "attended" (depending on which transfer you want to reach when pressing a BLF key while in a call)

Call transfer: D1xx/D3xx/D7xx

BLF key

This works the same way on all Snom desk phones (D1xx, D3xx, D7xx and D8xx) and strongly depends on how the quick_transfer parameter has been configured

If you leave it to the default "new_call", pressing a BLF will simply put the active call on hold and start a new call, so it cannot be used for a direct call transfer

If you set it to "blind" or "attended", pressing the BLF key will act accordingly and start a blind or an attended transfer directly

Dialling

While in a call, you can always press the Transfer context key on the display

This will prompt the phone to a dial screen, when you can dial the number you want to start transfer to

Once you dial the number, you have three options

  • Use the ok/confirmation key on the phone: this will prompt a blind transfer by default
  • Use the Safe Transfer context key: this will prompt a safe transfer, which means that if the other party answers the call this becomes a blind transfer, while if they don't you can still retrieve it on your side
  • Use the Attended context key: this will prompt an attended transfer, you will be allowed to talk with the other side and you can press the Transfer context key again once you want to finalise the call transfer

Call transfer: D8xx

In the same dial screen you can also see the recent dialled call history or access the directory, as below

Now three transfer options are possible

  • If you dial any number and press the Dial or OK key, this will prompt an attended transfer, you will be allowed to talk with the other side and you can press the Transfer context key again once you want to finalise the call transfer
  • You can scroll the dialled call history and choose to either Dial (to perform an attended transfer as above) or to use the Blind xfer context key to perform a blind transfer
  • You can press the Directory context key, look for a contact in the directory and press the Dial or OK key to start an attended transfer

Transfer: a recap

To recap all of those information

On the D1xx/D3xx/D7xx series

  • Blind transfer via BLF: set quick_transfer to "blind"
  • Attended transfer via BLF: set quick_transfer to "attended"
  • Blind transfer while dialling: disable disable_blind_transfer (by default), start a transfer while in a call with the Transfer context key, then type any number and press OK
  • Safe transfer while dialling: start a transfer while in a call with the Transfer context key, then type any number and press the Safe Transfer context key
  • Attended transfer while dialling: start a transfer while in a call with the Transfer context key, then type any number and press the Attended context key

On the D86x series

  • Blind transfer via BLF: set quick_transfer to "blind"
  • Attended transfer via BLF: set quick_transfer to "attended"
  • Blind transfer while dialling: this can only be done for the contacts in the recent dialled call history, by browsing the list and using the Blind xfer context key
  • Attended transfer while dialling: start a transfer while in a call with the Transfer context key, then type any number and press the dial or OK key
  • Attended transfer while dialling from the directory: start a transfer while in a call with the Transfer context key, then press the Directory context key, look for a contact in the directory and press the Dial or OK key
