The NFON phone system is a fully tested and certified by Snom, providing a simple and secure phone deployment and centralised endpoint management. Its supports all standard telephony features, such as call transfer, central directory, and CTI functionalities.

The objective of this article is to provide an easy step-by-step guide to get your Snom phone configured and ready to use on the NFON phone system.

Please make sure your phone is set up correctly.

Please check in advance that your phone has the latest stable  firmware version   installed.

If the phone has been in use before, please reset the phone to factory settings so that changes already made may not impair correct functionality.

Step 1: To add your snom phone to the NFON PBX

Provisioning a snom phone on the NFON PBX is very easy.

  • After unpacking and installing it, connect it to your network.
  • The phone starts and is automatically configured with the intended extension, phone number and other settings. This process is called provisioning.
  • During this provisioning the firmware is automatically checked and updated if necessary. Which firmware version is installed can be selected in the NFON web interface.
There you will find all firmware versions tested by NFON and some beta versions at your own risk.

After the provisioning and firmware update, if any, your Snom phone restarts and is at your disposal. The further configuration takes place in the web interface of NFON.

The phone should look like this now:

Step 2: Configuring Devices

To further configure your Snom phone you have to log in to NFON.

Select your phone in the list of devices (by MAC address) and press the pen icon to edit it. The MAC address can be found on every Snom phone on the back of the device.

Among other things, you can make the following settings here:

  • firmware
  • ring tones
  • codecs
  • location

If you activate the "Confirm location settings" sub-option under "Settings", you can force uniform configurations depending on the "location".

In this way, you can use the locations to create profiles that contain country- or department-specific settings, for example.

If you change a setting and click on the button "Save" it will be transferred to your Snom phone (provisioned).

Step 3: Configuring Targets

Targets are everything to which I can make, park, hold or edit a call. These can be classic telephones, of course, but also answering machines, call groups, parking positions and others.
For us, however, only the area of telephone configuration is of interest. In this case you could also use the term extension. Go to the "Targets" area and click on the pen symbol in front of the desired destination to edit it.

Here you can configure various things:

  • Display names
  • extension
  • Phone number under which this extension can be reached
  • Assigned devices. If you assign several devices, all devices ring simultaneously when the number configured above is called.
  • Voicemail box (answering machine)
  • Call diversion
  • Language and time zone
  • Outgoing phone number
  • Function keys

Step 4: Configuring function keys

One of the most important functions in telephony is the possibility of recurring operations by assigning an operation to a so-called function key.

NFON currently supports:

The two functions, BLF and Intercom, must be selected directly, all other functions must be configured by entering the correct control code.

Example: Setting up call forwarding in the service portal

Setting up call forwarding:Call forwarding to the phone number: 0171 12345 via the function key: 1

  • Press the PLUS symbol.
  • Choose function key 1.
  • Enter the following characters in the input field next to the number 1 (destination): *110017112345
  • Your entry is displayed below as a function code, confirm it again.
  • Save your entry by clicking on the confirm icon.

"( do not forget "0" for outside line access when forwarding to an external number!)

Another key can be assigned the code **11 to deactivate call forwarding.

Press the function key to activate or deactivate the forwarding.

Step 5: Configure function keys in the Snom web interface (WUI)

Enter Snom Webinterface
  • If you want to configure features that your PBX does not support, you need to set them up via the web user interface (WUI) of your snom phone. To access the phone, type the IP address of your phone into your internet browser (e.g. http://192.168.1.100). To find out the IP address of your phone press the Configuration key (gear wheel symbol) → "Information" → "System information".

    For more Information, click here.

After logging in, your telephone should look as follows under the menu item "Identity 1":

To configure additional function keys, click on "Function keys" in Snom WUI and then in the area, Line keys.

Line keys in this case mean all assignable function keys.

Line Keys

The Line key button is self-explanatory and allows to create a new call/line from the phone. It also blinks on inbound calls. There used to be two line key buttons enforced by the provisioning template for all supported phones. Now it is no longer mandatory, you can have none or as many as you wish.

Note: It is advised to have at least 2 BLF keys set as Line keys to make attendant transfers easy for the device user.

BLF

The Busy Lamp Field (BLF) has three functions: when pressed it dials someone’s extension and can also be used to ease transfers, color and flashing status changes according to the supervised extension (idle, ringing or busy) thus providing call information, and when the extension is ringing you can pickup the call.  To be able to pick up someone’s call see Managing Call Pick-Up Permissions for more information.

Speed Dial

Speed dials are used to dial extension numbers only, no presence information will be displayed on the light indicator.

Custom Speed Dial

Custom Speed dials are used to dial any external number or dial code. When adding a Custom Speed Dial, the user must specify the number, and a First Name and Last Name that will be used in the label is displayed on screens. No light indicator will be used.

Profile Status

Profile Status BLFs allows to change the extension’s status to the one specified: Available, Away, Do Not Disturb, Lunch, or Business Trip. No light indicator will be used.

Queue Status

The Queue Status BLF allows to change the extension’s global queue  Logged In status to the one specified, either Logged In or Logged Out. No light indicator will be used

Shared Parking

The Shared Parking BLF allows to park a call to the shared park slot specified, or to unpark a call from this slot. Light indicator is used to represent call parked.

Your Snom phone is now registered to the phone system and the function keys set up.
