General information
On a Snom desk phone it's always possible to reach the Rescue Mode by keeping the hash key (#) pressed while booting up the phone
If the phone is already powered on, you can reboot it by pressing in rapid sequence the characters  **##: if you keep the # pressed after that sequence, the phone will reboot and automatically enter into the Rescue Mode menu
You can always disconnect and reconnect the power source of the phone while keeping # pressed, and that will also get you into the Rescue Mode menu
D1xx, D3xx and D7xx and D81x series
On the D1xx, D3xx and D7xx series there are only two options in the Rescue Mode menu as below
The option "1. Settings reset" will simply reset the settings of the phone: this option will keep the same firmware as before and will not reset the certificates, any customisation that was uploaded via .tar file and the VPN patch of the firmware
The option "2. Recovery via network" will allow you to completely reset the phone by passing down a firmware image, compatible with the phone, via a local server
If you choose option 2, the phone will prompt a new menu in which you need to manually specify the phone's IP address, the Netmask for the network, the gateway and the IP address of the server the phone will use to find the firmware file
Once you configured these details and pressed ok, you will be prompt to choose a protocol between HTTP, FTP or TFTP
Once you choose the protocol, the phone will try and get the file from the server which IP address you've previously specified
The firmware file can be downloaded from Snom's website and saved into the server, and it need to have a specific name: a Snom D785 for example needs a file with name "snomD785-r.bin" (the exceptions are the Snom D712, D715 and D725, which needs a file with name "snom712-r.bin", "snom715-r.bin" and "snom725-r.bin" respectively)
D3xx and D7xx series with USB
WARNING
USB recovery is only available on phones manufactured with firmware 10.1.159.12 or higher: if you don't see the USB recovery option, your hardware doesn't support this feature
On D3xx and D7xx series phones with an USB port it's also possible, starting with firmware 10.1.159.12, to use a 3rd option as below
The option "3. Recovery via USB" will allow to factory reset the device, recovering it in a similar way to the recovery via network above
Once chosen, the phone will prompt the display below and try to find the file on the connected USB storage
The file name and format can be see on the phone's display, it will automatically look for those in the root of the USB storage
The USB device needs to be formatted with FAT32 format and it can be both USB 2.0 or 3.0
D86x Series
The desk phones in the D8xx series show 4 options once in the Rescue Mode menu, as below
Â
The option "1. Settings reset" will simply reset the settings of the phone: this option will keep the same firmware as before and will not reset the certificates, any customisation that was uploaded via .tar file and the VPN patch of the firmware
The option "2. Wipe overlay partition" will reset the phone to factory, including all settings, VPN and customisation, but it will keep the same firmware already installed on the phone
The option "3. Switch active partition" will allow you to switch between the current and the previous firmware version, keeping all the configuration: D8xx series phones have two partitions in their memory, one with the current firmware installed and the other with the previous firmware that was on the phone
The option "4. Firmware update" can be used to manually upgrade the firmware
Once you choose option 4, the phone will send a standard DHCP discovery to get an IP address, and once it does you can access the firmware update page by using http://phone_IP in a browser, as below
That will bring you to a firmware update page as in the screenshot, in which you can simply drag and drop the FW fileÂ
Once that is done, the phone will automatically start the upgrade and come back in a few minutes with the new FW and keeping all the configuration.
