You can only have one contact associated with a number. If you add a new contact with an already existing phone number the old contact will be deleted.
The Directory of the phone uses the unique contact number of the contact as the primary key. The directory is also used for Caller ID and thus having more than a single instance of a contact number in the directory would cause conflicts.
